Alternative Spring Break – Volunteer Abroad in PERU with H.U.W.E.A.

Take a morning flight to Cusco. Embark to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Enjoy the sceneries along roads with farms, small villages, mountains and get immerse in the Andean culture.

Our First stop will be the impressive Inca site of Pisaq, a place fulfilled with history, remarkable constructions and stunning views of the valley. Then explore the town and its local market, visit a traditional wood fire oven and enjoy the colors of the town. Transfer to your hotel or homestay in the Sacred Valley.

Today, we’re embarking on a mission to tackle littering head-on! Grab your garbage bags and gloves because it’s time to raise awareness. We’ll form teams to clean up trash and plastic bottles along the riverbanks and streets of our quaint town. This hands-on endeavor will span approximately 4 hours.

Following our cleanup, we’ll gather for a delightful lunch at a local residence and hear about the impacts being made by similar efforts tackled by teh local community.

Afterward, we’ll rendezvous with students from a nearby school for an engaging activity. Together, we’ll paint traditional Toritos de Pukara, employing ancient pottery techniques. These decorated pieces will serve as mementos for the students, while they’ll kindly gift you their crafted pottery.

Finally, we’ll return to your hotel or homestay, reflecting on a day well spent making a positive impact.

Exclusive Nomad activity: Toritos de Pukara painting and clean up.

After breakfast, we will set out to a remote Andean community, where we will spend a couple of days interacting and learning from the local people. Once we get the community, we will be assigned to our family hosts and we will participate in and help with some of the farming tasks they have for the day. Maybe harvesting some potatoes, plowing the lands, herding the sheep, or anything that needs to be done.

We will also cook Pachamanca together, a traditional way to cook underground with hot rocks that have been heated over the fire. After Lunch, our friends will share with us some of the Andean Techniques of weaving that they have been preserving for centuries. We will spend the night in a local house.

At night we can observe the stars make a bonfire and learn more about the local tales and legends.

After a nice breakfast with your local family, we will get ready with our tools and small native trees that we will take to plant in some areas around the surrounding mountains. We will cover a nice 4hr to 6hr hike along the Andean mountains and high plateaus, enjoying the beautiful landscapes and passing nearby lakes and wetlands that are important elements for the water source of the valleys below. Reforestation with native trees is an important part of conservation and environmental awareness.

The local communities have been trying to recover their local flora and we will help them with this important task.

Bid farewell to your hospitable family host as we prepare to depart. Our transportation awaits to whisk you away to Ollantaytambo. Immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring Inca ruins of the town, marveling at the grandeur of the Temple of the Sun’s colossal structures.

Wander through streets adorned with authentic Inca architecture, perhaps even visiting a local residence to engage with the charming guinea pigs.

Following a delectable lunch in town, we’ll make our way to the train station, where we’ll embark on a scenic journey towards Aguas Calientes.

Today you have a half day excursion (5hrs). Explore Sacsayhuaman national park where we can appreciate stunning constructions with giant monolithic walls.

Then we will participate of an Andean offering to Pachamama, a way to show respect and appreciation to all of the beautiful things that the earth provides us. After this special ceremony we will walk down to the historic center of Cusco, and wander around the main square and narrow cobbled stone streets.

Time permitting, we will plan to stop by an Alpaca Farm to see the popular Peruvian Llamas.

This evening, we gather for a farewell dinner, where we’ll discuss highlights our our tour and what we all appreciated about the experience.
